Lilja, the wife of an expatriate prosperous entrepreneur, finds herself cleaning her apartment in Cape Town, South Africa. As she pushes the divan in the living room to one side and starts vacuuming, she unknowingly overlooks the pin she dropped on the floor weeks ago. The pin gets sucked up by the vacuum cleaner. Later, when Lilja empties the vacuum cleaner bag, she disposes all of its contents, including the needle, into the garbage can. The next day, that garbage ends up in a landfill on the edge of a township.
Slindile, who lives in that township with her three children, is full of hope. She has decided to look for work in the city and plans to put on her best clothes for a job interview. But today, Slindile is at the landfill, recycling garbage. As she sifts through discarded items, something catches her eye—a glint of sunlight on a fancy pin. Slindile takes a closer look and discovers this pin would go perfectly with the dress she wants to wear for her interview. What luck!
The following morning, Slindile rings the doorbell of a prosperous businessman with whom she hopes to work as a housekeeper. When Lilja opens the door, she immediately notices the pin on Slindile's robe. Her first thought? "She has the same taste as me, and it's the same pin I lost! Wow! I think I'll hire her." Fate seems to have it!
